The Turkish Alphabet
So I get to Turkey, and, signs seem to use latin characters, so I should be ok... and I was: pronounce tuvalet very quickly, and it sounds like toilet. I say it sounds like toilet if you respect the original /u/ sound ("ou" to you) of u.
Was I b_ll_cks! The lovely mosque round the corner was called Camii. Cam? Camera? room? what? why? what's that got to do with مسجد* ? Turns out it was pronounced Jammy, redoubling the confusion, and Ç for Ch? not Ch? what? so obviously the script is wrong and needs changing.
But before we do that, we need to learn how to read the thing, so please come to event and help me work it out once and for all.
* I have recently discovered that masjid jāmi means central, public mosque, so the turks are well orthodox.
